English Summary:
An Appointment with a Fly
A jobless young man gets up in the morning and goes downtown hoping to find work, at least for the day. He stands with other fellow unemployed men and waits for luck to knock at his door. Time goes by and still nobody comes to engage him. He reaches into his pocket, hoping to find enough money to buy a coffee. He's lucky to have a little less than the price of the coffee! Never mind. He'll pay the rest on another occasion.
He gets the coffee, sits at a table and starts to sip. A fly comes buzzing around. It makes a few dashes, then flies right into his coffee. Gosh! Why should this happen to me now? He looks to the left, then to the right, and seeing no one is looking at him, he takes a used match and saves the drowning fly before it's too late. The rescued fly struggles and starts to move on the table, leaving traces of sadness and bitterness. Then it summons up its strength and takes off.
Lotfi continues to sip the coffee and when he finishes, he stands up. It's nearly midday. Time to go back home. Knock! Knock! His mother opens the door... Anything to eat? Yeah! He thanks God for the food, and before he goes downtown again... Mum! Got any money? Yeah... Half a dinar. Enough to pay for a coffee and a game of cards. Always losing..!
It's early evening, and the town gets very busy. Then, gradually, people start to go back to their homes, so Lotfi walks back, too. Knock! Knock! Anything to eat? No! He lies in his bed and soon starts to live... He doesn't need to make an effort to live this life...
