The Poem

Does it matter that the poet
presents an image;
two oystercatchers in synchronised flight
around a narrow inlet,
the beating of their wings harmonised
to the hiss of the waves on sand
and the slap of the sea on the shore.

He might have chosen instead;
two elderly lovers holding hands
as they walk their twilight lane
their smiles fleshing out
the fall of the land
given over to archaeology.
Would this meaning have more resonance?

In truth, he saw the fusion of the stars
that brightened the night.
He heard the Hallé and The Free Trade Hall
resonate to ‘The Young Person’s Guide’
and ennui gave way
to a prickling of the hair on his arms.
He saw a gathering
of daisies on the lawn.
He smelled the honeysuckle
that clung to the kitchen wall,
tight as a coal mine.
He tasted the ozone on the sea
and candyfloss and holidays.
He saw a boy with bloodied knee,
his tears stroked away
by a mother’s soft words,
and he fell in love
with the moment and the image
and all the language he heard them embrace.

:D Hi ya Danimik :D ...

I'm in love with this piece already my friend. What struck me, apart from the obvious beauty of it as a poem, was that it caught a lot of things running tandem to my own views on this glorious day...

The theme. The exploration on how poetry comes about or how the writer becomes inspired, the process, is a very interesting angle to take as well. I can only talk for myself here, but I'm fairly positive that the other writers on here will agree when they've read it, that this poem is a superb work by you...

Great to see you back on the good ship Sensitize © ... You are a respected and highly valued fellow pen and friend...

Thanks for sharing Mike :D ...
